Don’t Fall For These 5 Pest Control Myths

With all the fake news and old wives tales that spiral around the internet, it’s essential to make sure you “fact check” anything you read online.  This is true for pest control methods as well, especially DIY methods.

Some bugs get a bad rap from time to time, and sometimes people become fearful of a particular bug for reasons that are entirely untrue.  For example, earwigs have always gotten an untruthful reputation of crawling inside people ears and laying eggs.  This is not true!  It’s extremely rare for any insect to crawl inside your ear, especially an earwig.

There are many rumors and myths out there, but today we are going to focus on 5 of the more common myths.  Check them out below!

Myth #1:  Bugs Will Stay Away from A Clean House

This giant misconception that a clean house won’t attract bugs has caused many infestations.  While a dirty environment might make bugs stay longer and give them more places to hide, a clean house is not bulletproof against bugs.

When bugs come inside your home, they aren’t looking for dirt.  Bugs need three things to live, food, water, and shelter.  If your home provides these three things, then bugs will stay and tell their friends about their sweet new digs.

Pro-Tip:  A clean house will lessen your chances of a pest infestation but won’t stop it from happening.  This is especially true for bed bugs.  Bed bugs can live anywhere!  During your cleaning, you should always look for signs of bugs and make sure to tell your technician of any suspicious sightings.

Myth #2:  Mice Love Cheese

Mice have always been known to love nothing more than a giant chunk of cheese.  This is actually not entirely true.  Mice will snack on any type of food crumbs, cheese included, but cheese doesn’t make a trap more attractive than other food types.  Rodents prefer sugary foods, like peanut butter honey or candy over anything else.

Pro-Tip: Call a pro before tying to trap rodents.  Rodents can be dangerous and carry diseases.  Let the pros provide a solid extermination plan to keep your property rodent free.

Myth #3: Cockroaches Mean Your House is Dirty
If you see a cockroach in your home, that doesn’t necessarily mean that your house is dirty.  Like other bugs, cockroaches are in search of food, water, and shelter.  If your home provides those things, then cockroaches will be quick to move right in.  Once a cockroach infestation has been established, it can be hard to get rid of.  It’s best to call in the pros!

Pro-Tip:  Roaches can enter your home by opening the size of a quarter.  Make sure to properly seal the entry points into your home.  Get a tube of caulk and seal up any cracks, holes, or damages to your home.

Myth #4:  Bed Bugs Can Be Treated with Off-The-Shelf DIY Methods

Bed bugs can be very elusive and hard to treat on your own.  They are small, masters at hiding, and hard to identify.  To top it off, many sprays and powders offered in stores are never actually tested on bed bugs.  Because of the speed in which bed bugs multiply, it’s important to kill bed bugs as quickly as possible…including their eggs.

Pro-Tip:  Call ProChem proactive and ask about heat treatments.  Treating bed bugs with heat will eliminate all their hiding places and kill the entire lifecycle in as little as 24 hours.  Don’t wait until the infestation has spread!  Call ProChem ProActive at the first sign of bed bugs.

Myth #5:  If I can’t see them, they aren’t there

Wrong, wrong, wrong! Bugs are usually quite tiny and masters at hiding. Termites could be silently feasting on your home right now, and you wouldn’t even know it.  Did you know that termites cause more than 5 billion dollars’ worth in damaged every year in the US alone and insurance doesn’t cover it?

Pro-Tip: Talk to your ProChem ProActive technician today and schedule a termite treatment to keep your investments safe!
