5 Tips to Keep Your Apartment Pest Free

Posted on: October 1, 2018 by in Pest Elimination
No Comments

Living in an apartment has specific pest control advantages and challenges.  Here are 5 tips that will help you keep pests out of your apartment.

  1. Eliminate The Living Essentials For Bugs

Bugs are simple creatures.  They simply won’t and can’t move into a place that doesn’t provide them with readily available food and moisture.  Pests will continue to thrive in an area where these two elements are present and will be much harder to get rid of until the living conditions have changed.  Store your food in sealed containers, clear dirty dishes, keep counters and appliances wiped clean and take the garbage out daily.  Routinely check your home for leaks and notify management immediately so the issue can be resolved before bugs find the area.

  1. Clean Up The Clutter

Some pests, like spiders, like to hind in dark and undisturbed areas.  Eliminate these areas in your home by keeping pantries, cabinets, closets and storage areas organized.  Avoid accumulating piles of clothing by using hampers.  Remove any stacked papers, stacks of magazines and empty boxes from your home when you are finished with them.

  1. Seal It Up

Holes, gaps, and cracks make perfect bug “highways” into your home.  Bugs look for these entry areas around doors, windows, plumbing/pipes and at the foundation.  If you see any damage or cracking in any of these locations make sure to tell management right away to get it fixed.

  1. Don’t Try Untested “Old Wives Tales”

Not only are these myths often untrue, they can also be dangerous.  Over the counter pesticides can also fall into this category.  Off the shelf substances are often untested and can be very dangerous for your family and pets.  Don’t put the ones you love at risk of poisoning, allergic reactions, and other health risks by trying DIY methods.

  1. Call In The Pest Pros

Even if you are taking all the preventative measures above, you may still see pests in your apartment.  Pests can easily travel in apartments due to the shared walls and close living spaces.  Depending on your leasing agreement you can request pest control services from your landlord or call ProChem ProActive directly to treat your unit.  You can also suggest that your neighbors do the same to reduce the overall bug activity in your area.

Lost Business

As we mentioned above, lost business is one of the first ways that bed bugs can cost businesses.  Imagine having to close off multiple rooms, or even an entire floor of your hotel due to a massive bed bug infestation.  With improper treatments an infestation could take months to eradicate, leaving you with months of multiple rooms being unusable.  Lost business cam also happens in the form of bad publicity.  Bed bug sightings have taken flight over social media in the last few years.  We have seen multiple stories go viral with photos and videos of negligent businesses and their bed bug issues.  Publicity like this can put an entire company out of business!

Damages

From new furniture to damage from botched DIY attempts, bed bugs can cost businesses thousands in damages.  Improper heat treatment techniques have been known to cause fires and damage to the interior of structures.  Damage from chemical treatments, or from DIY treatments are also common.  If an infestation isn’t resolved quickly then blood spots, fecal stains and other remnants of bed bugs can result in the need to buy new décor.

Lawsuits

In the past 10 years we have seen a drastic rise in bed bug lawsuits.  HUGE settlements in the hundreds of thousands and even millions have been awarded to apartment tenants, hotel guests and others affected by bed bugs in public places.  Recently a Los Angeles family won $1.6 million, the biggest payout ever awarded in the U.S. for a single family bed bug case.  The bed bug attack took place in 2010 where the entire family was bitten by bed bugs in their apartment.  The management took months to eradicate the bugs, which resulted in anxiety, sleeplessness for the entire family and even disfigurement for the youngest boy in the family.

For many businesses, a $1.6 million settlement would devastate their finances and would likely result in them closing their doors.  For this reason, it is crucial to perform fast and effective treatments as soon as a sighting is reported.  ProChem ProActive offers K-9 detection to ensure that all of the bugs are found and killed.  ProChem also offers revolutionary heat treatments that can kill bed bugs in just 24 hours.  Don’t put your family and business at risk!  Kill bed bugs today with ProChem ProActive!  Call us at 1866-674-7779 to schedule a treatment.

Busting Bed Bug Myths

In the world of pest control there are a lot of myths and old wives-tales that can be misleading or completely false.  This leads to many failed DIY extermination attempts and un-necessary fear.  ProChem ProActive is here to put an end to those pest control myths….starting with bed bugs.

Here are some of the most well-known Bed Bug myths and if they are true or not:

Myth: You can’t see bed bugs

Reality: You can see all bed bugs, even the babies and nymphs with the naked eye.  However, for the most accurate inspection possible you should use magnification devices and K-9 detection.

Myth: Bed Bug only infest dirty people

Reality: Bed bug can affect anyone, even the cleanest locations.  While clutter does give them more places to hide, it is not a requirement for their survival.

Myth: Bed Bugs only come out at night

Reality: While bed bugs prefer darkness, keeping a light on will not keep them from biting you.

Myth: Pesticides will easily solve a bed bug problem

Reality: Pesticides often take multiple applications, months or treatments, and often result in failed attempts when used alone.  The best way to kill bed bugs is with heat.  Chemical applications are sometimes used as a compliment to the heat treatments in more extreme cases or as an extra precaution.  Heat treatments are known to kill bed bugs with just one application and have been proven to be ultra-effective at completely ENDING a bed bug issue.

Myth: The only place to get bed bugs is at a nasty hotel

Reality: You can pick up bed bugs nearly anywhere.  Public locations of all kinds have had bed bug issues.  Common places to find bed bugs are in movie theaters, libraries, apartments and motels, airports and public transportation.

Myth: Any exterminator can kill bed bugs

Reality: While many exterminator list bed bugs on their website as a service they offer, verey few actually have the necessary experience and training to perform effective treatments.  If you have a bed bug problem be sure to research your pest professional carefully.  Find out how many bed bug treatments they complete every year.  Make sure they have positive reviews online and ask your friends if they recommend anyone.  Finally, always ask if they offer heat treatments and k-9 follow-ups.  These treatment and detection methods are the BEST in killing bed bugs.

If you have a bed bug problem, or any other pest related issue give ProChem ProActive a call.  We can solve any pest problem!

This is Why Bed Bugs Are So Hard To Get Rid Of

Historically, bed bug treatments have relied on the use of chemicals to kill these blood sucking pests.  Recently scientists have been studying the reasons why these traditional methods are no longer working and what the alternative could be. A new study found in the Journal of Economic Entomology shows how bed bugs are developing resistance to two of the most commonly used insecticides used in bed bug treatments.

The common bed bug has shown considerable resistance to several insecticides, including one of the most commonly used chemical called deltamethrin.  The reduced effectiveness of this chemical is believed to be one of the main causes of the bed bug resurgence over the last decade, especially in big cities.

Scientists are now testing 2 other common insecticides to see if the effectiveness of those chemicals are being reduced by bed bugs evolution as well.  These two chemicals, bifenthrin and chlofenapyr are being tested on 10 different bed bug populations from around the US.  After extensive study 5 of these populations were found to have reduced susceptibility to both substances which left approx. 25% of the bugs studied alive.

These studies have caused concern for pest professionals around the U.S and is encouraging them to look for other treatment options for their clients.  Fortunately, some of the most savvy exterminators have already found the answer and are using the new treatments everyday with amazing success.  The answer is simple – HEAT!

Why is heat better than chemicals?

Aside from bed bugs apparent evolutionary resistance to chemical treatments leaving them ineffective, chemical treatments also pose a significant risk to those exposed to them.  Some people may be sensitive to chemicals as a result of neurological or other medical disorders, as well as many people experiencing rashes, breathing difficulties including asthma attacks, allergic reactions that require hospitalization, and reduced fertility.  Chemical treatments are bad for the environment and will pollute your in-door air quality resulting in many of these health issues.  Extensive exposure to these chemicals, such as for pest professionals and business managers that are exposed to the fumes regularly also have been shown to have higher risks for certain types of cancer.  Children that have been exposed to these substances have been shown to have a higher risk for cancer, and developmental delays.  Chemical treatments often take multiple applications before the problem is completely resolved, thus resulting in prolonged exposure to the insecticides and to possible bed bug bites.

Heat treatments are a non-toxic, 100% eco-friendly treatment option that is extremely effective when applied correctly.  Heat treatments take from 8-24 hours for full effectiveness.  The treated area can be re-entered at any time after the treatment is complete and will not require extra cleaning or exposure to any chemical substances.  Heat treatments are safe to conduct around the elderly, children and pets.  ProChem ProActive is at the forefront of the bed bug heat movement and is offering heat treatments to ALL of their bed bug clients.  Heat treatments can SOLVE a bed bug problem in just 1 treatment, leaving clients happier than ever possible with traditional treatment methods which could take months and many treatments before the problem was completely resolved.

If you have bed bugs don’t waste your time with “old-fashioned” treatment options.  Get the “new-and improved” heat treatments with ProChem ProActive today!

Bed Bug Incidents Rise 44%

Over the last several years insurance companies and pest professionals have seen a rise in bed bug infestations and liability claims around the world.  So next time you hear “don’t let the bed bugs bite”, take it seriously!

According to a liabilities report completed by a Germany based insurance company, bed bug bites and infestations were the second highest animal-related cause for liability loss, totaling 22% of cases.  Bed Bugs closely followed deer incidents (such as vehicle collisions) which came in at 58% of claims.  In the United States, New York, which is one of the “buggiest” cities in the US showed a 44% rise in bed bug incidents from 2014-2015 alone.

As of a 2016 study, the top cities suffering for the worst bed bug problems are listed. Thanks to the efforts of professional bed bug elimination experts, Las Vegas has moved down on the “top infested cities” list to number 49 of 50 cities.

Here are the top 10 cities with the WORST bed bug problem in the country!

  1. Baltimore
    2. Washington, D.C.
    3. Chicago
    4. New York
    5. Columbus, Ohio
    6. Los Angeles
    7. Detroit
    8. Cincinnati
    9. Philadelphia
    10. San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose

While Las Vegas may be controlling the bed bug problem more effectively in recent years, there is still a HUGE bed bug concern around the country.  There are a number of reasons why this rise in bed bug activity is happening, including increased travel, which allows bed bugs to move along with passengers as tiny hitch hikers, as well as the bed bugs ability to evolve resistances to commonly used pesticides.

While we can’t avoid these risks completely, there are proactive pest professional out there at the forefront of new technology that is proving itself to be extremely effective at killing these unwanted pests.  Heat treatment technology and K-9 detection are two ways that ProChem ProActive has risen its game against bed bugs in the past 10 years.  Heat treatments work by killing bed bugs due to high air temperatures that is directed into a room using specially designed heaters.  K-9 Detection dogs are then used to ensure that all bed bugs have perished and that the treatment was successful.  The K-9 unit can also be used pre-heat to find where bed bugs are hiding and ensure that the technicians are treating the entire problem.

Termites – The Silent Destroyers

Posted on: April 1, 2017 by in Pest Elimination

The termite’s ability to chew through wood, flooring and walls undetected gave them the name “silent destroyers”.  There are approximately 2,000 known species of termite in the world and each year they cause over 5 billion dollars in property damage for home and business owners around the world.  By familiarizing yourself with the signs of an infestation and knowing a few key tips to identify a termite issue you can prevent costly repairs.

Detection Tips:

Termite workers and younger termites are often light brown or whitish in color and do most of the “work” for the colony.  Because of their delicate soft body they can dry out easily if exposed to air and sun light.  These termites tend to stay in the nest or underground.  If they venture where you can easily spot them out you can bet there is a nest near by.

Another termite that you might see is a “swarmer”.  These termites are often miss-identified as a winged carpenter ant.  The easiest way to tell the ant and the termite apart is by looking at their body and wing shape.  A flying ant will have 3 sections to it’s body, while the termite will be more uniform in width.  You can also see a difference between the shape of their wings and antennae.  The ant has a bent antennae and two wings on each side.  The termite sports straight antennae and long straight wings as well.

Termites thrive in moist, humid, warm spaces and often construct mud tubes from the ground to their nest.  If the nest is in your home or business this can cause mold problems due to the extra humidity that these tubes allow into the wood.  Some termites even encourage mold to grow because it makes the wood softer and easier to chew.  If you spot any mud tubes or mold you should closely search the area for termite activity.

Treatment Options:

The most effective way to get rid of termites is to schedule a professional treatment.  ProChem ProActive offers a range of treatment options depending on the type of termites you have and the severity of the damage.  After a detailed inspection, the ProChem ProActive technician will offer a treatment plan and schedule the application as soon as possible.  In some cases heat treatments are an option to dry and heat the area to kill the insects without the use of chemical pesticides.  This treatment is most effective against dry wood termites and problems inside the home.

If you suspect that you have a termite problem call ProChem ProActive immediately!

Start Now To Keep Your Home Scorpion Free All Year

Scorpions are one of the most feared insects in the western United States.  Scorpions can deliver a painful sting that can prove to be dangerous.  Many exterminators will do a “chemical spray” to keep the scorpions from entering a home or business.  Unfortunately, this doesn’t always work and scorpions can still move inside before the poison can do its job.  At ProChem ProActive we are pros at getting rid of scorpions.  We use Thermal Elimination Technology to get rid of pests quickly and effectively.

Here are some tips to keep your home scorpion free.

Perform Routine Maintenance Year Round

Performing maintenance on your yard and home year round will greatly reduce the areas that scorpions can enter the home.  Also, by removing debris from the outside of the house it doesn’t give the bugs a comfortable hiding place.  Clean and maintain your yard, especially nearest to the home, by removing leaves, dead branches, yard clutter and grass clippings.  Also inspect your water spigots and watering systems to make sure they work properly and don’t leak.  All of these tasks will drive scorpions and other insects away from the house, and will allow for an exterminator to properly treat the home.

 Hire the Right Exterminator

At ProChem ProActive we use heat to kill bugs hiding in your home or business.  Heat kills all of the bugs that could be hiding in your walls, under the floors and in furniture.  Heat is especially effective on scorpions, bed bugs, roaches and more!   ProChem ProActive uses thermal cameras to detect where heat could be escaping from your home so that it can be sealed.  This will stop bugs from entering the home and kill any bugs trapped inside.  Thermal Elimination Technology is an extremely valuable tool that not all exterminators offer, so make sure you have a professional, experienced, and proactive exterminator like PROCHEM PROACTIVE!

Still not convinced?  Here are more facts about why HEAT is the right solution for any pest problem:

It’s Fast – Heat kills bugs the FIRST time!  Bugs are killed regardless of their size or location in the treated room or structure.  Scorpions can’t escape the heat by moving to another room, like they can with traditional treatments.  Scorpions are killed, along with any other pest living in the treated area, in just 8-12 hours!

It’s Safe – Don’t put your family in harm’s way by exposure to dangerous pesticides.  Heat is eco-friendly and won’t cause allergic reactions or breathing problems.

It’s Easy – Don’t worry about moving furniture, throwing away bug infested items or doing massive cleaning before the treatment. Heat will permeate the entire structure, and if there are any “cool spots” our thermal cameras will find them and allow the technician to correct the problem.  Heat treats every item in the room without leaving a residue, which means you don’t have to remove anything!

Ready to schedule your Heat Treatment?  Give us a call today and one of our helpful staff will get your inspection and treatment scheduled.  We can be reached at (866) 674-7779 or through our website at http://prochemproactive.com/!  Treatments available in Nevada, Arizona and Oklahoma!

Building a Defense Against Bed Bugs

Posted on: October 31, 2016 by in Pest Elimination
No Comments

Let’s face it, anyone can get bed bugs.  Even the cleanest homes, hotels, resorts and office buildings are susceptible to the dreaded bed bug.  However, there is hope!  By learning more about bed bugs and ways to prevent infestations you can drastically reduce the chances of them hitching a ride home with you. Here are some tips to keep bed bugs away from your home, business, and your loved ones in the upcoming year.

Around Your Home

  • Bed Bugs love clutter because it gives them plenty of places to hide. Keeping the clutter down around the home gives bed bugs less places to hide. This is a good excuse to do some “spring cleaning” this year and get rid of unneeded items.
  • Sealing your home not only protects against bed bugs it also makes it harder for other insects to enter the home as well. This should be a yearly task for any homeowner. Seal any cracks or holes to the outside, paying special attention to windows and doors.  Bed Bugs like to hide beneath flooring and behind molding and wallpaper.  Seal any areas between crown molding, windows, chair rails, baseboards, and flooring.  Don’t forget to do a detailed vacuuming before you start sealing to ensure the sealant will last.  Also glue down any loose wallpaper and seal any cracks in the walls.
  • Here’s another tip: We advise all of our clients to do regular inspections of their bed and surrounding areas. A simple visual inspection every few weeks should give you the chance to find any bed bug problem before it spreads to a bigger issue.  Check the edging around the mattress, under the mattress, and around the bed and bed frame. Keep in mind that bed bugs love plush furniture, so check other rooms and furniture as well.

While You Are Traveling

  • Pack a hard case suitcase instead of a duffle bag. This gives bed bugs less places to “grab on” and hitch a ride home with you.
  • Always inspect your hotel room – even expensive resorts have had bed bugs issues. A quick search of the bed should give you a good idea if your room is safe.  If any bed bugs are detected contact management immediately and request another room or change hotels.
  • Never place your luggage on the bed in your hotel room. Suitcases should always be placed on the provided rack, or on top of a hard surface.  Leave your bags in the hall or outside until all inspections of the room have been completed.
  • Upon returning home, leave your luggage outside or in the garage until you have inspected the contents and suitcase. All clothes should be washed and dried before placing them back in your drawers.

Visiting Other People’s Homes

It’s hard to believe that your family and friends would have bed bugs and not tell you before you stay…however many people are unaware of the bed bugs risk and may have an infestation and not even know.  If you think a place you have visited may have bed bugs there are a few precautions you can take….

  • Keep plastic garbage bags in your car to place your belongings into after visiting a place where you suspect bed bugs. Wash and try these items in the hottest environment possible to kill any hitchhikers.
  • If your friend has bed bugs always let them know. It can be a difficult subject to bring up, but in most cases they probably want to know.  If the problem is just starting they can call an exterminator and fix it before it becomes an expensive infestation.
  • Give your friends and family ProChem ProActive’s name, number and web address. Encourage your friends and family to read our blogs and learn the risks of bed bugs.  We also offer the best treatments available if you do end up with bed bugs.

At Your Office

  • High traffic areas are most susceptible to bed bugs, which may make your office a high risk area. Employees can bring bed bugs to work with them unknowingly and contaminate the whole office.  This is why we suggest you keep your personal items in a sealed bag or in a plastic tub in or under your desk.  This is especially important if bed bugs have been detected near you.
  • If you find bed bugs at work notify management immediately and encourage them to call ProChem ProActive.

After completing all of these precautionary steps you should have a much better chance of avoiding bed bugs this year….but remember, ANYONE can get bed bugs even the people that are most aware.  If you, your family, or your business has a bed bug problem please call ProChem ProActive right away.  We provide special heat treatments that kill bed bugs quickly and gets your life back.  Don’t waste your money with DIY treatments that don’t work!  Call in the professional pest eliminators today!

Chemical vs. Heat Treatments

Even the cleanest, most educated families can be subject to a bed bug infestation.  Bed bugs will infect any home, business, or public location, making them one of the easiest bugs to “pick up” in your everyday life.  Once you have bed bugs you are faced with tough decisions. Do I call an exterminator?  What kind of treatment should I choose?  Should I try one of the DIY chemical treatments I found online?  ProChem ProActive is here to help you make those difficult decisions and get your life back on track…Bed Bug FREE!

Many exterminators will offer the traditional chemical treatments to kill bed bugs, while this method can be effective in some cases, there are many drawbacks both to your health and the environment.  With heat you can kill bed bugs in as few as 8 hours, plus it’s safe, effective and keeps the environment clean; Which is why ProChem ProActive ALWAYS recommends a Heat Treatment for every bed bug problem.

Chemicals vs. Heat Treatments

Chemicals

  • Have been known to cause skin irritations, allergic reactions, breathing problems, and even nerve damage and cancer
  • Pest control chemicals have been linked to over 80 poisonings
  • Bed bugs have evolved to be 1000 times more resistant to traditional chemical treatments in the past 10 years
  • Chemicals contaminate the environment
  • Traditional chemical treatments are less effective against bed bugs, and won’t kill the eggs until they hatch, requiring many follow up treatments to end the problem

Heat Treatments

  • Bed bugs are extremely susceptible to heat above 120 degrees
  • Heat treatments don’t leave behind a chemical residue
  • The problem can often be solved in 1 treatment (follow up inspections are recommended to ensure the bugs are 100% gone!)
  • Heat kills all stages of the bed bug life cycle, even the eggs!
