This is Why Bed Bugs Are So Hard To Get Rid Of

Historically, bed bug treatments have relied on the use of chemicals to kill these blood sucking pests.  Recently scientists have been studying the reasons why these traditional methods are no longer working and what the alternative could be. A new study found in the Journal of Economic Entomology shows how bed bugs are developing resistance to two of the most commonly used insecticides used in bed bug treatments.

The common bed bug has shown considerable resistance to several insecticides, including one of the most commonly used chemical called deltamethrin.  The reduced effectiveness of this chemical is believed to be one of the main causes of the bed bug resurgence over the last decade, especially in big cities.

Scientists are now testing 2 other common insecticides to see if the effectiveness of those chemicals are being reduced by bed bugs evolution as well.  These two chemicals, bifenthrin and chlofenapyr are being tested on 10 different bed bug populations from around the US.  After extensive study 5 of these populations were found to have reduced susceptibility to both substances which left approx. 25% of the bugs studied alive.
